Who We Are
Monroe Public Schools is located in Monroe County in the southeast section of Michigan. Monroe Public Schools has an outstanding reputation for providing students with a quality education with a core curriculum that is aligned to the Michigan State Standards and Benchmarks.
Custer Elementary School is one of nine K-5 elementary schools in the district. The attendance area covers part of the city of Monroe and two townships. Custer is a two-building complex; Custer II being a K-3 building with an enrollment of 333 students and Custer I houses grades 1-5 with an enrollment of 600 students. This makes Custer one of the largest elementary schools in the state with a total enrollment of 933 students. Our population of students is broken down demographically as three percent (3%) Hispanic, seven percent (7%) African-American, one percent (1%) Asian, 89 percent (89%) Caucasian and other, four percent (4%) limited English as a second language.
Custer students receive a comprehensive instructional program that is consistent with the district and school mission statement and best teaching and learning strategies/practices. The core curriculum at Custer includes communication arts, math, science, and social studies. Students also take part in art, technology, physical education, choral and instrumental music, and library classes.
Custer has a staff of 50 classroom and special subject teachers. There are also approximately 26 support staff members. Some of these include a counselor, a parent liaison, and several instructional assistants. We are both North Central Accredited and school wide title one buildings.
The goal of Custer Elementary is to establish a learning community of life-long learners. All learners will receive the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to be successful in the school setting and as adults in society.
