The Dinsmore Sawmill was one of at least 30 sawmills in Milton County in the 1940s and 1950s. Some mills were fixed, others were portable so they could be set up on farms while the barns and houses were built of trees felled on site. One of the best-known mills was operated near this site on a 32-acre parcel by Ford Dinsmore and his sons Thomas and Lawrence. The mill and a planning mill were located behind Ford’s house. Pine, poplar, oak, and sweet gum were plentiful. The mill closed in 1998.
