About the East Branch:

The very first branches of the Dayton Public Library were the East and West Carnegie Libraries, funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The East Carnegie Branch, located on East Fifth Street, was in service from 1914 to the fall of 1969, when it was replaced by the current East Branch Library building on Wyoming Street. Originally, its most unique architectural feature was its elevation - it was built on pillars, with parking for staff and public underneath. In 1970, the library was the recipient of a Letter of Commendation from the City Beautiful Council of Dayton for "helping to make our City a better place to live and work." In 1982, the parking area was enclosed and is currently used mostly for storage for the library system.
