First Congregational Church Of Watertown

40 Deforest Street
860-274-6737

History:

Our church has stood in the heart of Watertown since 1739. Today, we are a community composed of families and individuals from many different faith backgrounds. We are a church where a diverse range of beliefs and different levels of faith commitment are welcome and appreciated. We are united by our concern for one another, our commitment to God's world, and our desire to deepen our spiritual lives through worship, learning and service in Christ's name.

As a member of the United Church of Christ (U.C.C.), this church embraces a theological heritage that affirms the Bible as the authoritative witness to the Word of God, the creeds of the ecumenical councils, and the confessions of the Protestant Reformation of the 16th and 17th Century. We seek a balance between freedom of conscience and accountability to the apostolic faith. The U.C.C., therefore, receives the historical creeds and confessions of our ancestors as testimonies, but not as tests of faith.

The U.C.C. has roots in the Covenantal tradition, meaning that there is no centralized authority or hierarchy that can impose any doctrine or form of worship on our members. Every U.C.C. congregation is an independent body that calls its own clergy and staff, makes its own rules and supports itself solely through the commitment of its membership. We are a democracy. Every member of the church has a voice and a vote on our organization and budget. Christ alone is the head of our church.
