About Us:
The Gateway Regional School District is a small, rural school system set in the foothills of Western Massachusetts. At over 200 square miles, Gateway is one of the largest school districts in Massachusetts. Gateway consists of five elementary schools, one regional middle school, and one regional high school, serving approximately 1400 students from the towns of Blandford, Chester, Huntington, Middlefield, Montgomery, Russell and Worthington. The schools operate on a total district budget of $15.5 million, and receive an estimated $1.3 million in additional grant funding each year.

Gateway enjoys strong parent and community support. Parents and community members are active in a number of groups including Parent-Teacher Organizations, the Middle School Afterschool Advisory Council, Middle School Band Boosters, Gateway Athletic Boosters, High School Band Boosters, the School Health Advisory Council, and the Friends of Gateway. Parents also chaperone field trips, help in classrooms and schools, and serve in special roles on School Councils and on the Gateway Regional School Committee. The public is always welcome to these meetings, which are posted in Breaking News on this website and in area newspapers. Anyone wishing to volunteer in a Gateway school or organization may contact Volunteer Coordinator Deb Carnes at 685-1025 for more information..

The district benefits from a number of partnerships with community organizations. Officers from the Massachusetts State Police, along with local police and fire departments, participate in school safety drills and serve on the district's Safe and Drug-Free Schools Task Force and District Crisis Team. We were the first rural school district in Massachusetts to open a School-Based Health Center, which is operated by Hilltown Community Health Centers Inc. at the Middle/High School complex. Additional counseling services are provided at school by the Carson Center. The Miniature Theatre of Chester has started a playwright's project with Middle School students. Area businesses generously donate goods and services on a frequent basis.

In return, the district strives to be a good partner in hilltown community life. The High School/Middle School complex is located in the hub of the seven towns, offering a convenient venue for athletic, musical and dramatic events that are enjoyed by the community at large. The Gateway Wellness Center--complete with cardiovascular, free weight, and strength training equipment--is open to staff and community subscribers before and after school, and on Saturday mornings. Many organizations--including the Gateway Youth Athletic Association, Gateway Little League, area churches, and civic groups--use the buildings and grounds for their activities, meetings, and classes.

The Middle School, High School, and Littleville Elementary School are located on land that once contained a hiding place used by the Underground Railroad. The Gateway Regional School District was named to honor this place, in its role as a "gateway to freedom". The district insignia features a gateway leading to the lamp of knowledge.
