The Greater Van Buren area is your "Gateway to the St. John Valley and Canada." Traveling north on US Route 1, this southernmost part of the St. John Valley welcomes you with its panoramic views of rolling hills and mother nature at her best. Home of the Acadian village, the largest historical site in the State of Maine, Van Buren is a small, close-knit community with strong ties to its cultural past.
The local economy is based on lumbering, farming, small industries and service-related occupations, as well as work opportunities at the Loring Commerce Centre, located just 15 miles from the Van Buren area.
Recreational opportunities are plentiful throughout the year. Summer features boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing at Van Buren cove on Long Lake. Winter means residents and tourists alike can enjoy snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snow shoeing. The area's abundant water and natural resources provide excellent fishing and hunting opportunities.
An International Boat Landing and Park lies on the banks of the St. John River, at which many community events, including picnics and festival celebrations, take place. But, it is the people that make the Greater Van Buren area the inviting and friendly place that it is.
Three communities, Cyr Plantation, Hamlin and Van Buren, comprise this part of the beautiful St. John Valley.
