The Grosse Ile Rotary Club enjoys great fellowship while serving others. In addition to the weekly meetings, three to four social events are held during the year.
Support of children and youth, both locally and internationally, is a high priority for the Club. This year Grosse Ile Rotary is hosting two exchange students and has sent one Grosse Ile student to Germany . The Club sponsors an Interact Club at the high school and teamed up with the Interact Club to staff the Grosse Ile Haunted House for an evening as a joint fundraiser.
In December, the Club helped put on a Christmas party at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Southwest Detroit for approximately 500 needy children. The Club sends two high school students to a Rotary Youth Leadership conference each fall and has helped to fund the annual middle school bus trip to Washington D.C. for a number of years.
Each spring the Club awards a Service Above Self Scholarship to a graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding service to the school and community as well as being an outstanding student, and also sponsors a reception for seniors and their parents. The Grosse Ile Boy and Cub Scout troops have been sponsored by the Rotary Club for many years. Several years ago the club helped the Grosse Ile Rowing Club in their fund-raising efforts.
The Club also recognizes and encourages community service among adults by presenting an annual Citizen of the Year Award. This Rotary year, the award will be presented in conjunction with the annual IslandFest.
Grosse Ile Rotary Club sponsors regular blood drives at the High School and contributes funds to various charitable causes such as Grosse Ile Goodfellows and the annual island CROP walk. From time to time the Club has helped the Grosse Ile Fire Department purchase needed items of Equipment. Both the Club and individual members in the Club also contribute generously to The Rotary Foundation in support of humanitarian projects around the world.
The Grosse Ile Rotary Club may be best known on the Island for the Grosse Ile Directory, which is distributed every 3 years at no charge to all Island households. In the second quarter of 2001, the Club will begin selling ads and working on development of the 2002-2004 Grosse Ile Directory.
Additionally, the club supports special events and projects, like the Grosse Ile Music Boosters, where we bought them a storage and travel trailer for the Marching Band equipment.
