H. A. Hagg Elementary School is located in Clarkfield, at the western end of the Yellow Medicine East School District. It is named for former Superintendent H. A. Hagg, who served the Clarkfield School District from the 1920's until 1960. H. A. Hagg Elementary serves students from preschool through Grade 6, and class sizes range from 16 to 27.
Students at Hagg Elementary are instructed in a variety of classes, including a full battery of language arts. Other classes include math, science, social studies, computer technology, art, and health. Students spend 30 minutes in music and in phy ed. on alternate days with specialists in those areas. H. A. Hagg, along with it's sister school, Bert Raney Elementary in Granite Falls, has taken big steps recently to strengthen it's reading program. We are in the 8th year of the Accelerated Reader program. This is a reading program that has students taking tests on the computer for books they have read. The objective of this program is to encourage students to read more books. Further, district K-6 staff received training on reading instruction methods from the Wright Group. Another program being implemented here is Reading Recovery. Now in its 7th year of use at YME, Reading Recovery is an intensive program designed to diagnose student reading problems and "fix" the problems early as students begin to read.
Elementary students get the opportunity to participate in co-curricular activities. Community Education runs a wide variety of athletic programs that focus on teaching skills and knowledge for the sports. Music and theater opportunities also attract a number of students. Students have many opportunities for early preparation before kindergarten. H .A. Hagg Elementary is home to Early Childhood classes, involving both students and parents. There is also a Head Start program located in the building. The elementary schools of Yellow Medicine East strive to provide young students with the instruction and nurturing needed to build strong adolescents. The staff at H.A. Hagg Elementary is proud to play a part in the development of quality students.
