Habitat for Humanity of Porter County is building homes in Hebron and Valparaiso this year.
Habitat is currently accepting applications for families to qualify to own a Habitat home.
To qualify for a Habitat house, applicants should demonstrate a need for housing. Current living conditions could be substandard, overcrowded or unaffordable (rent=50% or more of gross income),
Applicants must also currently have lived in or held a job in Porter County for a minimum of one year. Gross income of the family must be less than 50% of the area median income of Porter County .
Families should also demonstrate the willingness to partner with Habitat on home construction. Partner families are required to put in 300 hours of "sweat equity" volunteer work on their new home, along with a down payment on the property.
Selected partner families will, in turn, receive an interest-free mortgage through Habitat for Humanity.
Applications can be picked up at Spring Valley Shelter, Valparaiso City Hall, Sistar Mortgage, 202 Lincolnway, Valparaiso,
or can be downloaded from the Habitat web site www.portercountyhabitat.org
