About Us:
The Herbert S. Ford Memorial Museum, Inc. is the outgrowth of the late Herbert Smith Ford's (1889-1960) collection of objects and artifacts. In 1918, one of Mr. Ford’s sons brought home two German helmets from the town dump. These two helmets signified the beginning of Mr. Ford's collection of eclectic artifacts and objects from Claiborne Parish. He continued to add to this collection until his death in 1960. Soon after his death, Mr. Ford’s family donated the entire collection to the town of Homer.
Mr. Ford's successors and others in the community have continued to enlarge the collection by donating additional artifacts reflecting the life, culture, and society of North Central Louisiana. From its humble roots, the Ford Memorial Museum has grown into the Town of Homer’s premiere attraction. The Museum has hosted Smithsonian touring exhibitions and serves as a resource to area teachers and members of the public who are interested in learning more about the history of north Louisiana from pre-Columbian times to the present.
