Hornung Elementary is a responsible community of independent and interdependent learners sharing high expectations for social, emotional, and academic growth.

The Hilton Community prepares students to live and learn in an ever changing and diverse world as responsible citizens.

Hornung School was dedicated in 1977. It is the sister school of Spencer Elementary School in Brighton. The school has a capacity of 600 students (we currently have approximately 570), and has over 45,000 square feet of space. It was built at a cost of 1.9 million dollars. There are 25 classrooms clustered around a large Media Center. The building is named after Eleanor V. Hornung.

Eleanor Hornung taught school in Brighton from September 1942 until June 1976. Her 13 years elsewhere and 33 years in Brighton accounted for 46 years of school teaching when she retired. She is remembered and loved by hundreds of adults who had Miss Hornung in Third Grade. She cared for every child she taught and always found the best in them. Her picture hangs in our Media Center. She was inducted into the Brighton Area Women's History Roll of Honor in 2003.

A full curriculum is offered at Hornung Elementary School. Major subjects include: Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. Skills are developed sequentially across grade levels, with specific skill acquisition required before moving to the next level. Because of the wide range of student achievement and potential, this approach allows the teacher to more readily meet each child’s instructional needs.

Classes in art, vocal music and physical education are offered to all students in grades one through five. A media specialist meets with elementary students on a regular basis, to provide instruction in media skills, as well as to provide students with various subject matter and instructional materials. In addition to the major subject areas, Hornung Elementary provides a wide array of programs and activities sponsored by the school and the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

Hornung Elementary School has been recognized by the State Board of Education each year, for the past several years, for outstanding achievement by The Michigan Educational Assessment Program. Hornung is also fully accredited by the North Central Association. Among other things, it means our faculty must meet a set of standards and accreditation. This is reflected in the fact that over fifty percent of our teachers have received advanced degrees. In addition, teachers continue to remain current by going to several conferences and in-service training sessions over the summer and throughout the year.
