History of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce:
Many changes have occurred since the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce came into existence in 1888 as the Jersey City Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber has entered a new century at the center of one of the most vibrant and successful examples of urban development in the United States, Hudson County, and New Jersey.
Within the 46.6 square miles of this County, diversity exists on a scale unmatched by few urban areas nationwide.
Businesses include multinational corporations and development companies; banking/investment firms; importing, distribution, manufacturing, and transportation companies; cultural groups and non-profit associations; mom-and-pop stores and entrepreneurial startup interests.
Harborside Financial Center, once a terminal-warehouse, is recognized as the largest commercial building rehabilitation project in the nation. Not far from Harborside, the huge former Dixon pencil factory has been recycled into an award-winning residential complex. The county now boasts three of the state’s tallest buildings.
Frequently referred to as New Jersey’s Gold Coast, the Hudson County waterfront, stretching from Weehawken to Bayonne, gleams with new offices, housing, marinas, shopping, and entertainment sites enhanced by landscaped riverside spaces. Additional acres of former industrial waterfront land are also undergoing major development.
Shoppers in Hudson County enjoy a selection of enclosed shopping malls, discount outlet complexes, plus smaller stores clustered along streets and highways, around transportation hubs, and in residential neighborhoods. Retailers work together through active merchant associations.
Similar synergism has prompted the artistic community to set up studios and workplaces in converted lofts and residential brownstones. Their presence has, in turn, stimulated the opening of galleries and boutiques, creating an area frequently now called “Soho West” in Jersey City’s waterfront district.
Throughout the county, there is a blending of ethnic groups originating in Africa, Asia, The Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe.
The continuity of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce demonstrates the constant commitment of its business community to its survival, and ultimately, to its successful revival as the number one location choice of businesses moving to New Jersey.
The Chamber continues to work actively through its diverse membership, under the leadership of its trustees, to foster and improve the business climate and image of the County.
