About Us:

On April 30, 1917 when he was 27 years old he enlisted in the United States Marines at Akron, Ohio and he was then sent to the Naval Training Station at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and qualified as a sharpshooter and also for the aviation unit but then was regarded as too heavy to serve in that branch of service.

His regiment, the 5th. US Marines was among the first to be sent overseas during World War I.

On April 24, 1918 he lost his life in a gas attack on the Western Front, of gas poison received in action. He was Clearfield first soldier to fall in battle and there fore the post was named in honor of him.

John Lewis Shade Post # 6 was granted their Pennsylvania America Legion charter on August 1, 1920 and in 1924 became incorporated when they located in their home at 210 South 2nd Street, Clearfield, Pennsylvania 16830.
