Club History

The Kiwanis Club of Alliance, Ohio was organized August 19, 1920, and received its official charter on November 18, 1920 The first officers were Dan Hoobler, President; F.A. Hoiles, Vice President; Clyde B. Cassaday, Secretary; and F.W. Shaffer, Treasurer.

Our service projects have included the ODOT Adopt-a-Highway program, building stairs at Alliance's Silver Park, assisting with the construction of a boardwalk at Mount Union College's Huston/Brumbaugh Nature Center to make the trails more accessible to all, and the Bud Huffman Memorial Reading Program at Alliance's North Lincoln School. We also sponsor Academic Challenge each year and a monthly Student of the Month Program for fifth graders in the area. We have been active in the regional HOBY program held each year at Mount Union College. Our newest project is to provide infant bath thermometers to new parents so that they might better protect their children from burns.

We have assisted numerous local organizations with financial contributions, including the YMCA, YWCA, Mable Hartzell Historical Home, Domestic Violence Shelter, the Haines House restoration project, the Youth-ful Chamber Orchestra, and numerous others. We helped to establish the circulating art collection at Rodman Public Library and helped sponsor the building of new ball diamonds at Early's Hill Park. The Club has also met its $24,000 goal for Kiwanis International's IDD program, to try to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder from the face of the Earth, and we have also made significant contributions to other International projects. The Kiwanis Club of Alliance also sends a representative to Buckeye Girls State each year and sponsors a youth baseball team. We also sponsor a Scholarship program to help the top service-oriented graduates of area high schools pursue a college education.

Our major fundraisers are our annual Pancake Jamboree and our Waffle Wagon at Carnation Days in the Park. The nearly-five-decade-old Pancake Jamboree has enabled the Kiwanis Club of Alliance to fund over $210,000 of Youth activities since the Jamboree's inception.
