The site of Mt. Hope Golf Course's original nine was home to the Poly and Smith families since 1934. Merle Smith purchased his childhood home in 1989 for the purpose of building a nine hole public course and home life privilege for his mother.
Smith designed the golf course, organized PolySmith, Inc. and developed the site. The excavation was by "Clint Brown and Sons". All other construction, from irrigation and "grow in" was done by family members and friends. This original nine opened for play on May 29, 1993.
Five of the second nine was developed east on land in the Poly family since the 1860's. Four holes to the north were built on land purchased from Francis Sexton. Life privileges for Sextons were included in the acquisition.
The development of the second nine began in 1997. The 6,800 yards on 200 plus acres was opened for play in the year, 2000.
