Muncie, Indiana is a dynamic city located 58 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Described in several national studies as a typical American community, Muncie offers the advantages of larger cities without the hassles and costs associated with living in major metropolitan areas. Muncie is the county seat of Delaware County and had a 2000 census population of 67,430 persons. The balance of the county is, in part, made up of six smaller towns: Albany, Daleville, Eaton, Gaston, Selma and Yorktown. The 2000 census population of the entire county is 118,769 persons. Muncie-Delaware County is the primary retail, medical, and educational center for the East Central Indiana region (435,000 residents - Delaware County and the six counties that border it). Delaware County has an abundant and highly skilled workforce of approximately 60,000 persons. The regional workforce is nearly 210,000.
In November 2004 the Indiana Chamber of Commerce recognized Muncie as the "Community of the Year" for its efforts in community and economic development. In June 2004 Money Magazine ranked Muncie as one of the top five "up and coming" communities under 250,000 people in the United States. Expansion Magazine has helped confirm Muncie as one of the top locations for business by giving the city a 4-Star Rating in its 2003 Quality of Life report. Muncie, Indiana was an All-America city finalist in 2001 in a competition held by the National League of Cities and Towns.
The Muncie-Delaware County, Indiana Economic Development Alliance is an accredited economic development organization by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). Currently we are the only economic development organization in Indiana to have such a designation. Only thirty economic development organizations in the United States have received this accreditation.
