New Galilee, a small borough of approximately 500 is located in the northern part of Beaver County. The first settlers in this community arrived about 1804. In 1908, the State conveyed to Joseph Chapman a tract of land consisting of 368 acres. This plot of land was known as Chapman's Hall. Chapman later sold his land to James Nicholson, who came from the south and brought with him three slaves: Pompey and Tamer Frazier, and Betty Mathers. When Mr. Nicholson died, he willed his property to these three slaves who had so faithfully served him. Pompey and Tamer eventually died and Betty Mathers became the sole owner of the land. In 1840, Betty married Henry Jordan, a fiddler, and they had several sons and daughters. She eventually sold the land and upon it has been built the greater part of New Galilee. Betty Mathers Jordan passed away in 1872. The stream which flows through New Galilee is named for this family, "Jordon's Run". In 1854, the question came up as to what to name the town. The citizens, most of whom were devout Christians, said that: "As the small stream that flows through the village is called Jordon's Run, why not name it "New Galilee", a Biblical name, meaning beyond Jordon.
