Nitschke Mounds Park is located near the center of Dodge County adjacent to the Wild Goose State Trail and just west of the Horicon Marsh. The property is nearly 54 acres in size and contains about 39 effigy, conical and linear mounds believed to have been constructed between 800 AD - 1100 AD by the Late Woodland Effigy Mound Culture. The mounds represent one of the best surviving examples of the Mound Builders culture that once occupied the Dodge County area.
Park development is expected to be completed in phases, with the initial attention on the identification and mapping of the mounds. The first phase of the trail system around some of the mounds with interpretive displays is now open to the public. Additional trail segments are being worked on and will be opened when complete. Future developments away from the archeological significant areas are expected to focus on support facilities in association with the adjacent Wild Goose State Trail. Such developments could include parking, camping, picnicking, horse riding facilities and others. Facility developments and the timetable for development will be established as part of a Master Plan process. It is illegal to remove artifacts or otherwise disturb archaeological sites on state, county, village or city lands without a permit from the Office of the State Archeologist under the Field Archaeology Act Section 44.47 Wisconsin Statutes
