Plunge deep into nature at this narrow lake park. Steep mountainsides, pristine water, alpine scenery and peaceful environment make Paonia a haven for water and nature lovers.
Camp near a babbling stream, water-ski on a mountain reservoir, have a picnic, observe wildlife, all in view of the majestic Ragged Mountains. The park's natural beauty and abundance of wildflowers make it a "must see" for photographers and nature lovers.
Biking
Only on Highway 133, the county road or the campground roads; no trails, nor any other space conducive for biking.
Boating
Boating activities allowed from mid-June until mid-August, or until the water level drops enough to close the boat ramp. At that point, only carry on boats are allowed.
Camping
15 primitive campsites are available in two different campgrounds. No drinking water available at the park. BRING YOUR OWN WATER and don't forget the mosquito repellant!
Cross-country Skiing
Cross-country is allowed on the empty lake bottom if there is enough snow.
Dog-friendly
Dogs are welcome in the park as long as:
they are on a six foot or shorter leash at all times
their waste is properly disposed of
Fishing
Short period of fishing in reservoir from mid-June to mid-August. Fly fishing for trout on streams below dam is more productive.
Hiking
There are no hiking trails at the park.
Horseback Riding
There is no place at the park to ride
Hunting
Big game hunting is allowed, in season, with conventional methods. Hunters must stay 100 yards away from any campground or picnic area.
Ice Fishing
Stay off the ice. The ice is never safe due to open pot holes and general instability caused by bubbling natural gas.
Ice Skating
Stay off the ice. Ice is thin and unstable due to bubbling natural gas.
Jet Skiing
Jet-skis are required to travel in the same counter-clockwise direction as water skiers.
Picnicking
Three tables are located at the boat ramp and another six tables can be found below the dam at the Anthracite Area. Two of six tables at the Anthracite Area are ADA approved for the physically challenged.
Water Skiing
When the reservoir is full, you can ski up to two miles in one direction before you have to turn around!
Winter Camping
The campground is closed during the winter months.
