About Us
Ridge Area Arc in Avon Park, Florida is a private, not for profit 501 (c)(3) organization which was founded in 1957 by a group of local parents who were fed up with a system lacking services for their children with developmental disabilities. Pooling their resources, they created an environment where their children could learn at their own pace and in their own way. Their grass roots initiatives were the beginnings of organized advocacy for people with developmental disabilities and the birth of the non-profit agency called Ridge Area Arc. Today, Ridge Area Arc is governed by a board of directors comprised of local civic leaders, educators, business people, parents and program participants who volunteer their time to ensure the agency is as effective and efficient as possible.
Ridge Area Arc will soon celebrate 50 years of service to individuals with developmental disabilities from Highlands, Polk and Hardee counties. The programs we provide help to fulfill our mission of promoting for all persons with mental retardation and other disabilities, the opportunity to choose and realize their goals. The vision of the Ridge Area Arc is to be the best client-focused provider of services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Highlands and the surrounding counties. The value statements of the Ridge Area Arc will provide guidance as we pursue our mission. These values are: Treat everyone with respect; Treat every person as an individual; Respect and honor opinions and choices; Encourage independence and inclusion; and always act with integrity.
