About
Sandy Ridge Elementary School is located in the extreme northeastern corner of Stokes County on Amostown Road near the intersection of US Highway 704.Amostown Road was once The Great Wagon Road. Sections of the road used by the early settlers to Stokes County, most notably the Moravians, are still visible today. This road was considered the most important inland road of pre-revolutionary times.
Sandyridge was the name of the plantation and home of Joseph Scales in 1832. It is believed that Sandy Ridge received its name from this plantation. The first school at Sandy Ridge was a subscription school built before the Civil War. It was built by parents with slave labor on land acquired from Mr. Washington Andrews. The school term lasted from November through February, or about three and one-half months. The parents hired teachers at a salary of five to ten dollars per month. When this building was no longer needed for a school, it was deeded to the Sandy Ridge Methodist Church. The building has been renovated many times, but still remains on the site.
