Silverbrook Elementary School opened on August 16, 1988, as a replacement school for Lorton Elementary, which was built in 1934. Since its opening, Silverbrook has been one of the largest elementary schools in Fairfax County. Silverbrook's modern structure includes two theaters, a large carpeted gymnasium, a technology center, a resource wing, conference rooms, work rooms, a fully equipped cafeteria, and an expansive automated library. The computer-equipped classrooms, clustered around four pods, are predominately self- contained with the capability for creative instructional designs. A professional art gallery adorns the east and west stairwell and landing.
Differentiated staffing provides a full complement of teachers, specialists, assistants, and itinerants. Full-time art, media, music, reading, physical education, and technology teachers support the general, special, and supplementary educational programs from kindergarten through grade six. Reading, writing, and spelling are integrated across the curriculum according to the Primary Purposes and Expanding Expectations principles of the elementary language arts program. Math instruction is implemented through the use of newly adopted texts and enhanced through the math and technology labs.
Students receive additional support and enrichment from parent volunteers, reading buddies, and after-school tutors. Silverbrook is committed to providing a strong instructional program in a well-disciplined warm and nurturing environment that fosters student success. Silverbrook is truly a great place to teach and a great place to learn
