Stone's Throw CSA is dedicated to supporting sustainable local food systems in the Blackstone and French River Valleys of Massachusetts. Stone's Throw CSA is a multi grower CSA. Sweet Birch Farm in Douglas, Hidden Hills Farm in Oxford and Silvermine Farm in Sutton all work cooperatively with the Stone's Throw CSA Steering Committee to produce the food for our shareholders. In turn, the Stone's Throw CSA shareholders commit to work cooperatively 10 hours per season to assist with the running of Stone's Throw. This joint, cooperative venture is at the center of our CSA and the sense of community it brings to all of us is central to our existence. All of our farmers are committed to growing fruits, vegetables and herbs using organic and ecologically-sustainable methods, without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, working in harmony with nature to control pests and diseases. Our farmers focus on planting heirloom and open pollinated varieties of vegetables that encourage plant genetic diversity, have natural resistance to pests and diseases and have been selected over generations to taste great. We have planned over 25 crops for 2010 and strive to give our shareholders a variety of delicious vegetables each week, along with recipes and tips on how to cook them. The produce received each week will vary by season; spring shares may be smaller and fall shares more abundant. In addition farmers are dependent on growing conditions each season, so how much you receive of each item cannot be guaranteed. Our shares are designed to provide $550 of produce over the 18 week season, using 2009 produce prices. Annual membership in Stone's Throw CSA provides an identification card, reduced or free admission to workshops, an emailed copy of the newsletter Share, access to purchasing a share of produce, an opportunity to help sustain local farms and an opportunity to participate in the running of Stone's Throw CSA's organization. While the membership is open to everyone, it is required for anyone who wishes to purchase a share of the produce. We have openings for two internships during 2010. The interns will have the opportunity to learn different farming techniques from each of our farmers, focus on projects that coincide with their interests and interact with other interns through the Eastern Mass CRAFT workshops. The position will be full time from April through October and will include full room and board in a family setting. Interested parties should submit a letter of inquiry via email. Silvermine Farm has been in our family since the early 1700s. So you could easily say that we fit the definition of Darn Old Yankees! We certainly are proud of our heritage as stewards of the land for so many years. The face of the farm has changed over the generations, from the days when wives were hitched to the plow to the current day where the women run the farm. We are a Certified Naturally Grown farm for our vegetables, eggs and poultry. We also have two acres of strawberries, produced under the IPM method of agriculture with low impact chemical input and a small patch of strawberries grown using organic methods which will begin production Spring 2009 for our CSA members. Buying from a Certified Naturally Grown farm ensures that the food you eat is GMO free for the safety and health of both our family and yours.

Members pick up their shares on Tuesdays or Saturdays between 3 PM and 6 PM at Silvermine Farm, 96 Eight Lots Road in Sutton, MA. Shares not picked up by the end of the day are donated to a local food bank.
