About Us:
The Federal Works Agency funded the construction of Springfield Elementary School on the location of the former Big Spring School in 1939. It was a consolidation of Big Spring School, Rileyville School, and several one room schools.
The red brick Georgian structure faces the Blue Ridge Mountains within the shadow of the Massanutten Range. The original school contained ten rooms holding seven grades, a gymnasium/auditorium, a kitchen and the principal's office, occupied by Mr. E. Wilson Morrison, who also served as the full-time seventh grade teacher.
By 1942, one room was used as a cafeteria. During World War II, staffing was difficult and Springfield suffered from teacher shortages. During the 1950's, an eighth grade was added and was retained for several years. About this time, a P.T.A. was organized. Dishes were done by hand in the kitchen, until the installation of a commercial dishwasher in the late 1960's. It was during this time period that the asphalt basketball court was added.
About 1970, a reading center for teaching remedial reading was established, as well as a teacher's aide position to assist in a first grade classroom. Due to the use of stationary tables for eating, the gymnasium was not available for Physical Education. In the early 1970's, improvements were made in the old gymnasium /auditorium to enable students to again use it for P.E. classes during inclement weather. Portable tables and modern serving equipment facilitated this change. Other major improvements included cafetorium draperies, fireproof stage curtain, and new playground equipment. P.T.A. contributed generously to these projects. Soon after, two mobile units were added. Staff also increased with the addition of part-time positions that included a music teacher and a school psychologist. Educational television was installed in all classrooms.
In the mid seventies, there were the following additions and improvements: a half day Kindergarten, a central library, and three new mobile units to house classrooms and the Remedial Reading Center. Bright colors livened the school hallways and classrooms. Four teacher aide positions were added, along with a full-time librarian.
In the mid 80's, Springfield had undergone significant changes in its personnel, programs, and facilities. The staff then included an elementary guidance counselor, an art resource teacher, physical education resource teacher, gifted and talented resource teacher, and an adaptive physical education teacher. Also, an Apple computer lab had been set up with major hardware and software donations from the Potomac Edison Company and the Department of Education. A summer remediation program was initiated.
Plans were submitted to the State Department for Springfield's major addition and renovation project and it was completed during the 1991-92 school year. This plan included an addition to each end of the existing building, a basement area with several classrooms, as well as a complete gymnasium unit. Two IBM computer labs were set up in the basement of the new addition. A science lab was also set up in one of the former classrooms. Other additions during the 90's were a Preschool special education classroom, a four year old program, an additional learning disability classroom and a full-time nurse.
