History:
St. John was begun in 1904 by a small group of men and women who came from Finland to work as engineers in the tanneries and as domestics in the households of Peabody. They worked hard to preserve their Christian faith and their Finnish heritage in their new land. They built our present church building in 1915. For many years St. John was also known as the Finnish Church in the religious and ethnic diversity of Peabody.
St. John has its historical roots in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and its predecessor bodies. St. John has also affiliated with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ, an association that affords the congregation theological alternatives and additional outlets for ministry to broaden its focus and forms of outreach and service.
In the years since its founding, St. John has been small in numbers but large in its determination and faithfulness. Today, the congregation remains a small but dedicated fellowship of faithing people of all ages and backgrounds who love God and value the worship and teachings of our Reformation heritage.
