History:
The Town of Grand Lake is a statutory municipality of the State of Colorado incorporated in June 1944. The Town is a resort community with a population of 476. It is the western gateway to the Rocky Mountain National Park located on the shores of Colorado's largest natural lake. Situated at 8,369 feet, it offers spectacular views, numerous outdoor activities and resort amenities including quaint shops and restaurants along a rustic western boardwalk.
The Grand Lake area is the oldest resort community in Colorado. It was a summer ground for the Ute and Arapaho Indians, who named the lake Spirit Lake, long before it became a tourist destination.
The original Grand Lake City was settled in 1867 by Judge Joseph Wescott. The Grand County seat was located in Grand Lake City from 1881-1888 until on July 4th a shoot out between warring County Commissioners and Sheriff's deputies occurred and the County records were moved to Hot Sulphur Springs. Several victims of the shoot out are buried in the Town Cemetery.
The present site for the Town of Grand Lake was established when a patent was purchased from the U.S. Government in 1881. Many annexations have occurred since the original survey.
