Town Of Tazewell
History
The first pioneers to explore the Tazewell area were the long hunters, surveyors and land speculators. In 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker recorded in his diary about his visit to the area. He remarked on the lush grass, plentifulness of game and large quantities of coal. Over 200 years have passed, but the natural beauty of the region has remained unspoiled. The beauty of the mountains and vast areas of pastureland continues to delight visitors to the area.
The Town Of Tazewell was first settled in 1799, and was incorporated in 1870. It was first called Jeffersonville Township, the Tazewell Courthouse and finally, Tazewell. The Town serves as the County seat of Tazewell County and is one of the most historic areas in the County. The original character of the community has been preserved with its tree-lined streets and well-groomed Victorian houses.
With the coming of the railroad in the late 1880's, Tazewell County advanced in exporting agricultural products and coal. Today, with Routes 19 and 460 cutting through the Town, businesses and industry are expanding, along with an increasing number of tourists who enjoy camping, fishing and hiking the Appalachian Trail which borders Burkes Garden, a designated Virginia Scenic By-Way.
The Tazewell area abounds in a rich historical heritage. The pioneer spirit of the early settlers' struggle and sacrifice that produced the tenacity and self-determination which successfully settled the wilderness prevails today in the concern and dedication of public officials and private citizens who are meeting the challenge of providing the unique quality of life enjoyed by the Town residents.
Preservation of this pioneer heritage is important here, but so is future planning and development. The Town of Tazewell offers its residents a quality public school system, 3 colleges within commuting distance, a modern community hospital, churches representing 15 denominations, excellent shopping centers, a public library with over 33,000 volumes and the city-operated Lincolnshire Recreational Park. Tazewell area residents are served by 7 radio stations, 6 television stations and 4 newspapers.
