About Us:

Wakulla County is a small rural county located in the panhandle of Florida. The county covers an area of 600 square miles with 89 percent of the land classified as commercial forest land, over one-half of which is a national forest and wildlife refuge. It is one of the fastest growing counties in the State due to its close proximity to a metropolitan area and its highly rated school system. The school district is experiencing rapid growth and an increase in student population. There is minimal amount of developed industry in the county. The largest industry is a commercial ball powder producing facility. Other industries include an asphalt plant, a fuel refinery, a tax exempted electrical power producing plant and a sea going barge terminal. The recreational and commercial seafood related enterprises, once a mainstay of the rural economy, has suffered substantial shut downs due to legislative mandates over the past five years.

Wakulla County School District has three elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one charter and two facilities which house pre-school/dropout prevention/adult/community programs. As of April 2006, the total population for pre-school through twelfth grade (including adult education) is approximately 5000 students. As one of the fastest growing School Districts in the State, Wakulla County is preparing for the new influx of students. A new elementary school is slated to open during the 2008-2009 school year. Over 10% of current teachers and administrators in the district are National Board Certified, making Wakulla number one in the state. Wakulla County Schools continually rank in the top 10 districts in the State in FCAT reading, math, and writing.
