About the Township:
Washington Township, originally occupied by the Lenape Indians, was settled in the 1700's by German Protestants and became known as German Valley. The area known as Schooley's Mountain was probably America's earliest summer resort and spa because of the chalybeate water mineral springs. Today, the area is known for the German Valley Historic District stone structures, excellent services, and it's proximity to New York City. Recreation is still an important attribute with Township, County, and State Recreation facilities, and native trout streams and rivers.
