Waynesboro Fire Department

29 South Potomac Street
717-762-2616

The first fire company of record in Waynesboro was the Washington Engine Company which was organized in 1840. In 1879, the company reorganized and took the name The Mechanics Steam Fire Engine & Hose Company. Geiser Manufacturing donated the company their first steam fire engine
which had a boiler made of cooper. In later years, a Silsby Fire Engine, a Nott Fire Engine, and a combination chemical wagon were added.

Always There Hook & Ladder Fire Company was organized on November 2, 1879 with about thirty residents of Waynesboro. Their first meeting was held at the old town pump in center square. "Always There" was chosen as the company's name since it was the sister company that provided ladder work
to the Mechanics Fire Company. Both the Always There and Mechanics were housed in the Academy of Music building known today as the Borough Hall. In 1899, the fire companies were moved into Fireman's Hall as it was built by the borough. In 1954, the Mechanics Steam Fire Engine & Hose Company moved into their new home at 10 Virginia Ave. The new home was a gift from Sudie Clayton Weaver. By 1967, the Fireman's Hall was rebuilt for the Always There Hook & Ladder Company.
Today, modern fire equipment is housed at the two fire stations. The apparatus consists of two pumpers, one engine tanker, one heavy duty rescue squad, one mini pumper, and a command vehicle. Borough of  Waynesboro provides five paid apparatus drivers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
