Dr. Adam Back is a Board-Certified Neurological Surgeon who is Fellowship trained in Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery from Duke University.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in biology at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Back completed his Medical Degree from the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine. He then went on to complete his Residency training in Neurological Surgery at Duke University Medical Center. During his last year of training, he completed a Fellowship in Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. Back has spent the last several years practicing comprehensive neurological surgery with specialization in complex spine surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina. As an expert in both cranial neurological surgery and comprehensive spine surgery, he evaluates each patient and tailors their individual care plan by focusing on the least invasive treatment options invoking non-surgical options when possible. As a fellowship trained spine surgeon, he offers the latest in spine treatment and has been extensively trained in both minimally invasive spine surgery and complex scoliosis and deformity surgery.
Dr. Back manages all spine conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine including: degenerative spine, spinal stenosis, radiculopathy, spinal oncology, spinal cord stimulation, spinal deformity and adult scoliosis. He is also able to take care of patients with prior spine surgeries with complex spine revision surgery as one of his specialties.
Dr. Back served in several leadership positions through the years and is an advocate for educating both medical students and residents. He has mentored and educated many students through his prior positions of adjunct assistant professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and as an adjunct assistant professor at Campbell University. He also enjoys teaching other spine surgeons approaches for minimally invasive spine surgery. In addition to teaching, he has mentored students on research projects and has presented the research findings at both local and national meetings.
Currently Dr. Back is also completing his executive MBA through the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to grow his business and leadership skills. His goal is to use his new knowledge to foster community development and economic vitality for the local community.
Dr. Back is excited to join MUSC to bring his talents and passion for patient care and is championing the new neurological service line for MUSC-Catawba Division.
