Dr. Van Stamos was appointed IBJI’s Chief Medical Officer in October of 2022. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacements. He has been helping patients in the Chicagoland area find relief for their hip and knee pain for over 20 years. Dr. Stamos is often described by patients as thoughtful, attentive, understanding, and caring. He genuinely enjoys getting to know his patients and working collaboratively toward their treatment and recovery process. He includes patients in the decision-making process every step of the way and is dedicated to exhausting all options to find the right course of treatment, whether surgical or non-surgical. Dr. Stamos takes the time to educate patients so they understand their condition, understand the available options, and are empowered to make confident decisions about what care options are best suited for their life.
Dr. Stamos is well studied in the full spectrum of treatments for operative and nonoperative care and thoughtfully guides his patients to a customized treatment plan that will serve them best. He offers patients the latest options in regenerative medicine treatments including stem cell treatments, PRP therapies, and amniotic fluid therapies. He also offers a full range of operative care treatments including inpatient and outpatient hip and knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, revision hip surgery, and revision knee surgery and other minimally invasive surgical techniques, which help minimize complications and reduce patient recovery times. Dr. Stamos stays on the cutting edge of orthopedic care and offers nonoperative care including steroid injections and hyaluronic acid with ultrasound guidance and fluoroscopy, if needed. He also has an abundance of knowledge and experience working with a wide variety of implants and materials in the realm of joint replacements.

He keeps informed of the latest developments in his field through conducting clinical research and has been involved in developing surgical instruments, implants and programs used in computer assisted surgery. His knowledge base for the development of computer assisted surgery spans over the course of decades since the creation of Robodoc in the 90’s—the earliest computer assisted hip replacement—all the way to the MAKO robotic surgery system. Dr. Stamos is certified in the use of the MAKO robotic surgery system for MAKO unicompartmental and MAKO total knee arthroplasty.
Supporting Dr. Stamos and his patients are Kate Zhuchkova and Maggie Coughlin. Kate and Maggie help to keep an open line of communication with patients to answer any questions or concerns. He and his team spend as much time with patients as they need to make the right decisions about their care.
Dr. Stamos was drawn to medicine from his passion of improving the quality of his patients’ lives. He attended Northwestern University School of Medicine where he was enrolled in the exclusive Honors Program for Medical Education. He then completed the prestigious Otto E. Aufranc Fellowship—one of the top two fellowship programs in the country for joint replacements.
Outside of the office, Dr. Stamos is an active member in the Greek Community. He is married with two boys, who are a huge part of his life. In his free time, he enjoys skiing and cycling, which give him an added appreciation of the importance of healthy joints and helps fuel his determination to improve his patients’ conditions.
