This Black History Month, MoMI community partner The Afrikan Poetry Theatre is presenting its annual film festival with a program of short films, discussions, and awards at Museum of the Moving Image. The program features five short films directed by Black filmmakers, including the NAACP Image Award–nominated Chocolate with Sprinkles, about a bickering couple given one day to work on their marriage; the thrilling Shoot Films, Not People; the fantasy short Powerless; and two informative documentaries: Butterflies Jump Too and Dating in the Social Media Era.
Chocolate with Sprinkles director Huriyyah Muhammad will receive The Afrikan Poetry Theatre's Oscar Micheaux Award for Black Excellence in Moving Images in honor of her contribution to the Black independent film industry. A filmmaker will also receive The Afrikan Poetry Theatre's Black History Film Festival Award.
Following the film screening, the winners will give acceptance speeches, and there will be a Q&A discussion with the filmmakers.
Cost: $17.50 / $12 senior and students / $10 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. There is a $1.50 transaction fee per ticket for all online purchases. The cost of admission may be applied toward a same-day purchase of a membership.
