This year the WHMA will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the historic Whistler House edifice, built circa 1825. Visitors can celebrate this historic milestone as the museum presents a long line of Whistler House Artists-In-Residence, spanning 125 years.

The federal colonial home has seen many influential residents through its long and rich history. From groundbreaking industrialists, leading engineers, historians, and socialites, to boarding house owners, mill girls, caretakers and slaves as part of the Underground Railroad. It has also hosted many VIP visitors from U. S. Ambassadors, governors, senators, and statesmen, to bestselling authors, artists, leading academics, entertainers, and top museum leaders. After 200 years, it continues to be a beacon of art and culture throughout the region and world.

The Whistler House has been the home to countless talented artists. For 125 years, these artists in residence practiced their artistic talents inside the walls of the beautiful edifice. Starting at the beginning of the 20th century with Mary Earl Woods, a variety of multi-talented artists have perfected their talent, created noteworthy works of art, and enhanced the value-added art to the greater Lowell community and beyond.

From emerging to established artists, each unique artist-in-resident has significantly contributed to the museum’s mission of promoting the arts in Lowell and beyond. This interaction not only enhances the artists' own work; but also enriches the cultural landscape of Lowell. As part of the Lowell Art Association, the Artist-in-Residence Studio stands as a testament to the museum’s ongoing commitment to supporting artists and advancing the fine arts.

"I have had the distinct pleasure and honor to have worked with some of these fine group of artists" says President and Executive Director Sara Bogosian.

"This exciting show is a wonderful collection of the multi-talented and diverse artists in residence who have made the Whistler House their home." She adds, "I encourage everyone to come and see this collection of fine works by this prestigious group of artists."
