Brandon Postow’s latest series, The Alchemist’s Path, reflects the ancient process of alchemy—turning base matter into gold—as a metaphor for creative and spiritual transformation. Inspired by Zosimos of Panopolis, the first known alchemist, Postow approached this series as a physical and symbolic journey through the seven stages of alchemy.
Using a mixture of wire mesh, plaster, paper, foam, plastic bags, and found materials, Postow explores the tension between raw matter and refinement. Layers of salt washes, scraped-back textures, and metallic finishes mimic the breakdown and rebuilding inherent in alchemical work. Each piece represents a different stage of the process—from the fiery destruction of Calcination to the harmonious union of Coagulation.
Brandon’s work embraces imperfection, highlighting the beauty that emerges through struggle and transformation. These textured pieces evoke the mysterious residue left at the bottom of an alchemist's cauldron—a reflection of both creation and dissolution. ”This series was messy and challenging, but also magical. I can’t wait for you to see it!”
Also, this month our guest artist is Carol Baker. Carols says, “Art to me is an external representation of internal expression. Though I have worked in most media, I find experimenting with mixed media and textures the most rewarding. Travel inspires a lot of what I create, and I have won several awards for my work, including my very first international competition in Japan in the 6th grade.”
Though she tends to follow the beat of her own drummer, she is constantly taking classes to find new ways of expression, including at the Corcoran, Virginia Commonwealth University, and from masters and dabblers in Taos, Hawaii, Seattle, and other locations in the lower 48.
