During the Week of Cuban Culture, join the Cuban Heritage Collection and the Federación de Estudiantes Cubanos for a reception in the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion followed by a film screening and discussion of "Hijos de la Diáspora" in the Kislak Center at the University of Miami.
"Hijos de la Diáspora" (view trailer) is a documentary that explores the persistence of Cuban culture among recent generations of the diaspora. The 21 participants interviewed for the film represent different moments and ways of emigrating from Cuba. Some have never visited the island or have only vague memories. The film investigates the experience of living between two cultures: the Cuban home and the country where they grew up.
From Scotland to Ecuador, passing through Canada, Spain, and Angola, 21 young Cubans who grew up in nine countries outside the island share their experiences of adapting to life between two cultures. The interviewees have been raised in the United States, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, and other countries. Despite stories of familial rupture and alienation, they each highlight the survival of Cuban identity.
The film will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles. A question and answer session with the director and producer will follow the screening.
This event is a collaborative partnership between the Federación de Estudiantes Cubanos and the Cuban Heritage Collection.
