First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: The hike will begin at the park entrance and follow the Flume Trail out to the Flume Environmental Campground and back to the entrance.

Parking: Main entrance parking lot – 20022 Castle Creek Road, Castella, CA 96017

What to Expect: This is a gentle hike with several short hills and descents. The trail winds through the forest to our environmental campground. We have several stops planned along the way to discuss park history, geology, and forest health.

Length of Hike: 3.0 mile, 5 hours

Preparation: Bring hiking shoes and poles. If snow, we will make it a snowshoe hike.  

Special Instructions: If snow is covering the trail, we will conduct a snowshoe hike. Please check the weather and be prepared. In the event of sever weather and/or road closures we will cancel the hike.

Ages: 3 years and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult
