First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: Visitors can park at the main elephant seal viewing area parking lot along Highway 1. The large parking lot is about 5 miles north of the Hearst Castle entrance. On Apple and Google Maps, enter "Elephant Seal Vista Point". Meet at the southern end of the parking lot, near the large wooden kiosk.

What to Expect: Join CA State Park Elephant Seal Docents for a walk at the elephant seal viewing area in Hearst San Simeon State Park. Discover the fascinating life cycle and natural history of these marine mammals.

Length of Hike: 1.0 mile, 2 hours

Preparation: Dress in layers for the coast. Close-toed shoes recommended.  

Special Instructions: One mile, easy, flat terrain consisting of pavement, boardwalk, gravel, and dirt. Rain or inclement weather will cancel hike. The rookery has an accessible boardwalk and educational panels for a self-guided option if the walk is canceled.

Ages: All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
