First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: The hike will meet in the Rock Spring parking lot at the intersection of Pantoll Road and Ridgecrest Boulevard. This parking lot is approximately 1.5 miles up Pantoll Road from Panoramic Highway.

Parking: There is no parking fee in this lot.

What to Expect: This is a round trip hike from Rock Spring to East Peak. Distance is between 7 and 8 miles with a difficulty of moderate to strenuous. Multiple guides will lead different hike routes and participants can select level of difficulty.

Length of Hike: 7.0 mile, 5 hours

Preparation: Participants should dress in layers and wear shoes suitable for hiking on rocky trails and in muddy conditions. Sun protection is also recommended. Participants should bring drinking water, lunch, and snacks. Poison oak may be present along the trail, so sensitive individuals may want to carry poison oak wipes.

Special Instructions: This hike will proceed in moderate rain, but heavy rain or other severe weather conditions will cancel hike. Pantoll Road may close if there is storm debris blocking the road, leading to a change in start point. In case of cancellation or change in starting trailhead, please check Mount Tamalpais State Park's social media for updates.

Ages: Children as young as 7 are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
