First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: This Hike will begin at the Ray Miller Trailhead, located in the La Jolla Canyon entrance of Point Mugu State Park. The La Jolla Canyon entrance is located across the highway from Thornhill Broome Beach campground and is South of Mugu Beach.

Parking: Participants can park for free along PCH in designated areas or park in the La Jolla day use lot. Day use fees are $3 per hour or $12 for the whole day. Exact cash or credit can be used at the automated pay machine located in the day use lot.

What to Expect: Enjoy the crisp winter air as you traverse switchbacks, pass native plants, and perhaps spot wildlife along this westernmost starting point of the Backbone trail.  

Length of Hike: 5.4 mile, 4 hours

Preparation: Participants should wear long pants, hiking shoes, hats, sunscreen, and. bring plenty of water and snacks.  

Special Instructions: Rain or Red Flag Warning will cancel hike.  

Ages: 12 years and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
