First Day Hikes is a national-led effort that encourages individuals and families to experience, with a seasoned guide, the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors and in doing so may inspire them to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year and an individual’s lifetime. Nature has been proven to boost our moods and make us feel healthy and exploring the outdoors is the perfect way to start the new year.

Location: The park is located at 8653 Station Road, 3-miles southwest of the intersection of Interstate 5 and Stockdale Highway, west of Bakersfield, California.

Parking: Day-Use Parking is $8 per automobile. Free parking with an Adventure Pass, California State Library Parks Pass, or California State Parks annual pass.

What to Expect: Explore the Tule Elk SNR on a guided driving tour. Don’t miss this family-friendly tour consisting of a brief presentation on the tule elk, a tour of the visitor center, and Auto Safari of the reserve to view an endemic California subspecies of elk.  

Length of Hike: 2.0 mile, -10 hours

Preparation: The tour will be approximately 1.5 to 2 hours long. Bring binoculars to view the wildlife at the reserve, a camera, layered clothing, water, snacks, or lunch in case you would like to enjoy the picnic area after the tour.

Special Instructions: The Auto Safari will happen rain or shine.
