Start the new year with a leisurely hike at Government Canyon State Natural Area with the Friends of Government Canyon.

We’ll hike the historic Joe Johnston Route from its trailhead to the turn-off for Wildcat Canyon Trail and return the same way. This hike is about 2 miles long and will have some slight elevation change with fairly rocky conditions.

Who Is Invited:

All ages welcome, but children must be able to walk the distance or be carried by an adult. This trail is not suitable for strollers. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Open to the first 15 hikers who check in at the Visitor Center between 8:30-8:45 a.m.

No pets please.

Where to Meet:

Meet at the Rainwater Harvesting Tower at the Visitor Center.

How to Prepare:

Dress for hiking outdoors; sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails; bring two (2) liters of water Per Person, lunch, and a snack if you like.

Plan to arrive early as mornings can be very busy. The Natural Area’s front gates open at 7AM; plan to check in and be ready to go no later than 8:45 a.m. The hike starts promptly at 9 a.m.

Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
