Best friends Bud and Doug are working together on a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, a wine presser from the medieval German village of Schlimmer, a happy and cheery place, although it is horribly dirty and depressing, and no one except Gutenberg can read. Intent on saving the townspeople from their own ignorance, Gutenberg turns his wine press into a printing press. His beautiful but dim assistant Helvetica is in love with him, but Gutenberg is unaware of her feelings. Meanwhile, the show's villain, Monk, an evil monk who worships Satan, schemes to destroy the printing press in order to keep ignorance alive and maintain control over the townspeople through inaccurate readings of the Bible.
With minimal talent and few resources, the two friends pitch their show at a backer's audition, playing all of the roles themselves, switching hats with the characters' names on them to indicate which roles they are playing. Since Bud and Doug's research into the life of Gutenberg was limited to a quick Google search, they take a "historical fiction" approach, better known as making stuff up. Despite their ineptitude, their high-energy and optimistic performance of their show launches their dreams and Bud and Doug are awarded a Broadway production contract.
This production of Gutenberg! The Musical is sponsored by Broadway Bound's Summer Spotlight program which provides opportunities for teens interesting in producing their own shows.
