With all its historical context and implications, the chandelier serves as a powerful vehicle for contemporary artists to explore deeper questions and further dialogue on a broad range of issues. Many of the 45 artists presented in Incandescence: The Chandelier in Contemporary Art use the chandelier as a means of critique, while others employ it as a means of eliciting feelings of desire. The works on view contemplate aspects of taste, as well as juxtapositions of luxury and oppression, consumerism and necessity, past and present, and elitism and populism. In this exhibition, the chandelier’s function of casting light is twofold: it also metaphorically illuminates the dark corners of history and memory, shedding light on forgotten or suppressed narratives.

This is a collaborative exhbition between three CUNY galleries: Shirley Fiterman Art Center, Lehman College Art Gallery, and Hall of Fame Gallery at BCC.
