Vonnie Kyle burst onto the Portland music scene in 2021. Emerging from the pandemic era, she brought a bold and distinct sound that had been brewing in a garage-turned-studio during lockdown. Her powerful voice and commanding presence quickly captivated the local music community as venues reopened and the scene rebuilt itself.
Though she seemed like a new face, Vonnie had spent years honing her craft. The Minneapolis-born alternative rock artist had previously released a handful of EPs and demos. Prior to the pandemic, she was a dedicated touring solo artist, selling DIY CDs out of a suitcase. The pandemic forced her to shift focus, and with her move to Portland in March 2020, she set her sights on creating her first full-length album.
Released in April 2022, Imperfect Parts was the culmination of two years of hard work and a laborious, remote production process. The album showcased her powerful voice and skill as both a singer-songwriter and rock performer. The debut single, “The Brink of Breaking Down,” was an explosive introduction to her sound, drawing comparisons to My Chemical Romance with a clear nod to 90s rock. The follow-up title track, “Imperfect Parts,” had an anthemic tone, reflecting on the acceptance of flaws, with a memorable chorus and infectious energy.
The album’s diverse tracks, ranging from high-energy pop-rock to country-pop slow-burns like “Better Than Me,” resonated deeply with listeners. The poignant piano ballad “Cereal Bowl” offered a stark reflection on trauma, adding depth to the already dynamic record. With critical praise from outlets like Guitar Girl Magazine, Vonnie established herself as a rising star, blending alt-pop, alt-rock, and folk-rock into a distinct sound.
In 2023, Vonnie released the single “Is It?” a hard rock track which explored the emotional toll of relationships with addicts, continuing to showcase her introspective songwriting. Her most recent single, “Something More,” was released in January 2024, marking her shift into heavier, more guitar-driven rock. Influenced by Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, and St. Vincent, Vonnie brings their intensity and experimental edge into her evolving sound. Currently, she’s working on her next record, expected in the summer of 2025, promising even more evolution in her music.
