RACHEL DERSTINE
VA006 - Twists and Curves Quilt
Full-Day Workshop - $90
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
Did you ever wish you could create a free form art quilt featuring movement and flow? Learn to make this vibrant quilt full of depth and flowing lines. We will learn how to do curved piecing, fused applique, and couching (stitching yarn to the surface of the quilt). A pattern for the above quilt will be provided in class. You will choose 3 main hand-dyed or ombre fabrics for your background then create your circles from coordinating batiks and hand dyed fabrics. Supply list provided. All Levels
Students to Provide
Paper pattern: to be provided in class. This is a 20” x 26” finished quilt.
Fabric: Choose a limited color palette. 3 basic colors work best, and you may have different values of those colors.
3 - ½ yard pieces of background fabric. I highly recommend choosing hand dyed fabrics which read as solids but have some mottling. You may choose gradient (ombre) fabrics. Look for two of the colors to be directly across the color wheel for the best effect.
6-7 fat quarters of batik or more textured hand dyed fabrics for the circles. Striped batiks are always fun. 3-5 coordinating colors of yarn, any thickness.
1 yard - Backing and facing fabric One 22” x 28” piece of batting.
Please bring some scrap fabric, batting and backing to practice couching – 12” x 12” is fine.
Thread:
Your favorite piecing thread in coordinating colors – I like Aurifil #40 or #50 Coordinating colors of your favorite quilting threads – I like Glide, Isacord, or Floriani. 3 coordinating colors of Madiera Super Twist #30. I will have some for sale in class. Optional: Aurifil Invisible Thread for the bobbin when couching.
Notions:
Freezer paper – 2 sheets, 18” x 28”
Parchment Paper – 2 pieces 15” x 24” DO NOT buy cheap generic brands, only use Reynolds. The cheap brands will permanently stick to your fabric and you will not be happy.
Mistyfuse – one package of 20” x 2.5 yards is plenty. I will also have some for sale in class.
Sharpie Pen for tracing the pattern onto freezer paper.
Marking pencil or chalk for fabric. You may wish to bring two – one for darks, one for lights.
Rotary cutter with extra blades. We will be cutting fabric and paper.
Medium size cutting mat. Pins Thread snips
Scotch Tape & masking tape Starbucks Straw
Dritz Fray Check Spool holder
Paper bag for your scraps and threads Small iron and ironing surface.
Power strip
Sewing Machine & Presser Feet
Sewing machine in good working order is required. Bring manual. Walking foot Quarter inch foot for piecing

DAVID OWEN HASTINGS
VA017 - Mini Mid-Mod Quilts
Full-Day Workshop - $135
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
These charming little quilts are inspired by Mid-Century Modern design, and are a great skill-building project to learn a number of quilting techniques.
Work small, Work smart, look great.
We will start with a simple, modern color palette of neutral fabrics with a flash of color. Clean lines combined with simple design give each tiny composition a sophisticated feeling. Since we are working very small, this is a great project for using small scraps and bits of special fabric.
Participants will learn the quilt-as-you-go method, and a PDF materials and supplies list will be emailed in advance. Hand stitching adds a sleek, linear element. Finishing techniques will be demonstrated, and participants will have time to finish a set of coasters, or a small wall quilt!
WORKSHOP DETAILS
Select a range of neutral fabrics (all light, medium or dark), and a bright accent color. Solids, and subtle, small-scale prints or textures work best.
Cut cotton batting and backing fabric into 5″ squares.
Cut a selection of the neutral fabrics into small strips (sizes will be provided).
Cut a small amount of the bright accent color fabric.
Learn the quilt-as-you-go technique, working from the inside out.
Explore strip piecing and leaving the raw edges on the outside for extra texture.
Trim your small quilt blocks and stay stitch the edges.
Learn about hand stitching, and experiment with adding your own design.
Sew the backing onto the top of your mini quilts, leaving a space for turning.
Turn and press, then do a final stitching around the perimeter.
A complete PDF supply list, plus step-by-step notes and templates will be emailed to each participant. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time. This is an all-levels class. You should be comfortable using your sewing machine, and it should be in good working order. I look forward to sharing and sewing with you! For more about David, please visit www.davidowenhastings.com or follow @davidowenhastings on Instagram.
Students to Provide
Cotton sewing thread: 40- or 50-weight, medium grey
Cotton batting: cut into 5" x 5" squares (cut 9–12)
Cotton backing: cut into 5" x 5" squares (cut 9–12)
6–8 neutral fabrics: choose solid or subtly printed quilting cotton fabrics in a neutral color family. Very subtle textures are OK but no strong prints, please. Choose colors in one family with similar values, such as ALL light grey, ALL medium grey, ALL black, ALL tan, ALL navy, etc. If you use prints, make sure they are very small and low-contrast. Yarn-dyed wovens are nice for this project and provide a texture contrast to the printed cottons. Cut into 4" x 6" pieces (cut 5–6 from each neutral fabric). Also bring 2 fat quarters extra, which you will use if you’d like to make a wall hanging.
Accent fabrics: choose strong, bright, modern colors. Solids or subtle textures/prints. Cut two: 4" x 6", cut one: 1.5" x 6", cut one: 1.25" x 6". (See provided PDF for additional cutting details and examples.)
#8 or #12 Perle hand quilting cotton thread
Please cut the 5" x 5" squares of backing and batting to size before class, so you can have as much time as possible to work on your mini quilts. DAVID SIROTA
VA044 - Storm at Sea
Full-Day Workshop - $85
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
Are you curious about paper piecing? Do you and paper piecing already have a love/hate relationship? Do you love the accuracy you achieve, but hate the process of getting there? Well, this class will change that to a LOVE relationship. We’ll be using the versatile Storm at Sea pattern to learn my “No More Tears” © method of paper piecing. Although we won’t be finishing the entire project in class, you’ll have a good start, and the tools you’ll need to finish it at home, in half the time you’d expect from paper piecing. Don’t believe me? You’ll just have to come and see for yourself.
All Levels
Required class kit, $5 payable to the instructor in class, includes pattern and printed materials.
Students to Provide
Your baggies of pre-cut fabric and some extra just in case
Rotary cutter with a fresh blade
6” x 12” ruler
Small cutting mat – 9” x 12” is fine.
Invisible Scotch tape (any brand)
Pencil or pen for taking notes.
A hand needle (embroidery, cotton darning) with a sharp point and long eye
Highlighter – any color except yellow
Add-A-Quarter ruler – 6” or 12”
Fabric and paper scissors
Something to collect your scraps.
Oral B Pro-Health Comfort Plus Dental Floss or any ribbon floss
A Word About Fabric: Please, keep it simple, and keep in mind that we’re here to learn a new method, and maybe not create the ultimate Storm at Sea masterpiece. Ideally, we’re looking for 2 contrasting** fabrics, and if you want, a third color, you’ll want to use a different fabric in the same color family as your dark fabric. Either way, your Storm at Sea will shine. The finished project will be simple to construct, yet impactful.
Why only 2 (or 3) fabrics? Because this class is less about design and more about technique. Like anything new we learn, we want it to become habit, and if we’re focused on design, it takes away from our practice time.
If you want to add a third color for more movement, I find that a variation of your “dark” fabric works well.
All fabric is cut cross grain or Width of Fabric (WOF). Measurements assume 40" of useable fabric. Bring cut pieces to class in three baggies...one for Large Center Squares, one for Sashing Rectangles, and one for Cornerstone Squares.
**Contrasting fabric means any 2 fabrics that will stand out on their own and make the lines of your quilt top “crisp”. They can be solids, a print and a solid, or 2 small prints that read as solid from a distance. Another thing to remember is that solid fabrics will be a little less forgiving if your points don't match precisely. When selecting your fabric, avoid directional prints, large prints, or 2 prints that share the same color(s).
Cutting Specs:
If you start with 2 yards of each fabric, you'll have enough left of the dark for your binding and enough left of the light for the backing. You'll be using
41.5" of dark fabric and 29" of light. If making a 3-color quilt, adjust the yardage as detailed in the cutting directions for Baggie #3.
Baggie #1 Large Center Squares: (9 total used for wall hanging)
From the Dark Fabric:
Cut one 4" strip. From this strip cut nine 4" squares.
Cut two 4-1/2" strips. From these strips cut eighteen 4-1/2" squares. Cut these eighteen squares diagonally in half to form thirty-six half-square triangles. Place them in Baggie #1.
From the Light Fabric:
Cut two 3-1/2" strips. From these strips cut eighteen 3-1/2" squares. Cut these eighteen squares diagonally in half to form thirty-six half-square triangles. Place them in Baggie #1.
Baggie #2 Cornerstone Squares: (16 total used for wall hanging)
From the Dark Fabric:
Cut one 2” strip. Cut this strip into sixteen 2” squares.
Cut two 3" strips. Cut these strips into thirty-two 3" squares. Cut these thirty-two squares diagonally in half to form sixty-four half-square triangles. (If you don't have enough fabric, use the remainder of the 4" strip from the Sashing Rectangle to make up the difference.) Place in Baggie #2
From the Light Fabric:
Cut two 2 1/4" strips. Cut these strips into thirty-two 2 1/4" squares. Cut these 32 squares diagonally in half to form sixty-four half-square triangles. Place in Baggie #2.
Baggie #3 Sashing Rectangles: (24 total used for wall hanging)
From the Dark Fabric:
Cut five 4" strips. Cut these strips into twenty-four 4"x7" rectangles. Place them in Baggie #3.
If using the third color, follow the cutting directions above and you’ll start with at least 20” of that fabric. From the Light Fabric:
Cut six 3" strips. Keep the strips folded, wrong sides together. Cut these strips into forty-eight 3"x5" rectangles. Cut these forty-eight rectangles diagonally in half to form ninety-six "uneven" or asymmetrical triangles. Place them in Baggie #3.
Note: Since these triangles are mirror images and asymmetrical, they have a precise placement in the block. It is important that you make sure to keep your fabric strip folded in half as it came off the bolt before cutting your rectangles and then triangles.

VA051 - Adventures in Gelli Plate Printing
Full-Day Workshop - $95
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
In this fun, process-oriented workshop, explore methods of monoprinting on cloth using a Gelli Plate™. Create complex textural imagery by patterning with found objects and fabric paints. Join me as I introduce several methods of producing prints and layering imagery. Your work is only limited by your imagination. Come prepared to have fun and be seduced by the silky-smooth surface of a gelatin plate. All Levels
Students to Provide
Fabric: Pre-washed cotton fabric, either plain or previously dyed. This does NOT need to be PFD fabric. You may also overprint commercially-printed fabrics.
Amount determined by how fast you work. Between 4 and 6 yards seems to work for the average student. Smaller pieces are more manageable, so please cut down a few fat quarter sized pieces (18”x22”) before class.
Fabric paint: You may use any fabric paints or textile inks you have. Thin/watery paints like Dynaflow will not work for this process. Also stay away from metallic paints. You may print with any brand of fabric paint that is not thin and watery. Setacolor, Profab, Versatex and Jacquard, all available at Dharma Trading Company and Pro Chemical and Dye are great options. Transparent paints work best. Linked below are paint starter kits. You may also want to add a larger bottle of white paint if you prefer pastel colors. If you don’t want to purchase a set, bring at least black, white, and two of your favorite colors. https://www.dharmatrading.com/paints/kits/jacquard-textile-colors-traditional- starter-set.html?lnav=paints_kits.html, https://prochemicalanddye.net/paints/profab-textile-paint-starter-kits/12-pack- painters-palette-profab-transparent-paints.html
A hard rubber brayer (available at art supply stores or online. I prefer the Speedball brand). A Gelli Arts® Gel Printing Plate (at least 8”x10”) (available at art or craft stores and online).
A variety of textured found objects for patterning such as: wire whisks, construction fence, mesh from clementine boxes, leaves, string, rubber bands, corks, bubble wrap, kitchen sink mats, old lace, the bottom of wine bottles, etc. Let your imagination run wild! Check out dollar stores and home improvement stores for things with fun patterns on them. Include a couple of cotton swabs if you have some on hand.
Rubber or foam stamps and stencils that you have on hand.
An inexpensive foam brush or two. A couple of plastic (or eco-friendly) spoons to scoop out paints.
A spray bottle for water. This can be a washed, recycled sprayer. It does not need to be new, but it does need to be clean. A palette: a couple of styrofoam meat trays from the grocery store work great.
Scissors for cutting paper and a few sheets of scrap paper.
A cleanup rag and an old yogurt or sour cream container for rinse water.
A roll of inexpensive large size garbage bags to lay under your fabrics while they air dry. Plan according to how much fabric you bring. Plastic tablecloths from the dollar store are also an option.
Use gloves and wear old clothes. Use an apron if desired. A nail brush will help clean paint from fingernails. Be sure to label ALL of your tools and brushes with your initials before bringing them to class.
Optional: Bring any thermofax screens you might own.

VA054 - Scrappy Quilts
Full-Day Workshop - $90
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
At last year's Mid-Atlantic show, I offered Scrappy Quilts as a half-day class. It was so popular that many of you asked for a full-day class. I'm pleased to tell you that David Mancuso agreed to let me offer a full- day Scrappy Quilt class this year. It will surely fill up rapidly so sign on as soon as you can! Time to clean out those bins of fabric scraps just waiting patiently to be used in a quilt project. The fabrics that looked great on the bolt but when brought home weren't a good match to anything and got tossed in the scrap bin. For past Scrappy Quilts classes, many students selected themed fabric from the piles - i.e., Halloween, animal, or Christmas prints, and it isn't easy to figure out why some fabrics are rejected while others are collected! You'll find a variety of colors, prints, focus fabric, and batiks available in these classes and Pat is bringing a lot of her own rejects to add to the pile. She'll also have a variety of her templates for you to purchase for the quilt you'll create. *Important - This class is for the free spirit and takes advantage of impromptu design - it's not intended for those quilters who prefer formality. Beginner Level
Required class kit, $25 payable to the instructor in class, includes the templates and instructions.

Rotary cutter and mat to cut on - if you have a turning mat bring it 6" x 12" ruler
