Scott Zona, Botanist and Author
Charles Darwin is best known for his theory of evolution by natural selection, but after publishing his most well-known work, On the Origin of Species, he turned his attention to the study of plants. Darwin observed and wrote about climbing plants, carnivorous plants, orchids, pollination biology, and other botanical topics. In honor of his 216th birthday on February 12, this lecture highlights Charles Darwin's contributions to botany.
Followed by a short talk by Janice Swab titled: "Should you travel to the Galapagos Islands?"
Travel to these islands has become increasingly popular over the last two decades. From a "sustainable" number given as 32,000 tourists/year in the 1990's, often as many as 32,000/month (or more) now is clearly unsustainable. Volunteering for five weeks with the Galapagos Conservancy in 2023, gave me a "behind the scenes" look at the impact of the current numbers visiting these islands.
