The UCSC Science Communication Program invites you to join us for our first SciCom Movie Night on March 13! Popcorn + refreshments provided.

The UC Santa Cruz Science Communication Program invites you to join us for SciCom Movie Night on March 13. We will screen two short documentaries and present a Q&A with director Annie Roth (Porter, Marine biology; M.S., Science Communication). Refreshments will be provided.

About the films:

Hellbent (winner of more than a dozen awards, including best short at the New York Film Festival): In order to protect their local watershed from becoming a dumping site for toxic waste, a mother and daughter stand up to a fracking company, kicking off a multi-year battle that forces a court to consider the legal rights of nature. Watch the trailer at https://www.rothreporting.com/general-1.

Little Penguin Love Island: For the world's smallest penguins, finding love and raising a family amongst the hustle and bustle of human civilization can be tough. But with a little luck and a couple of helpful humans, anything is possible. Watch the trailer at https://www.rothreporting.com/general-1.

About director Annie Roth (https://www.rothreporting.com/): Annie is a freelance science journalist, filmmaker, and children's author based in Santa Cruz, California. She covers biology, ecology, and wildlife conservation issues for National Geographic, the New York Times, Hakai Magazine, and many other publications. Through storytelling, she strives to make the world a better place for humans and non-humans alike. Annie earned her bachelor's (Porter, Marine biology) and master's degrees (M.S., Science Communication) from UC Santa Cruz and lectures in the UC Santa Cruz Science Communication Program.

All events will take place at Kresge College Academic Center.
