From: Shiawassee Arts CenterDavid Broadworth:
David Broadworth began studying art at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan in the 1970's, then pursued a career in business. Since 1997, he has renewed his education through research and community education courses. He has been inspired throughout his life by the beauty of nature. As a young child growing up in rural America, he was consistently intrigued and fascinated by the light, shadows and color present in nature. His work influenced by artists that shared his enthusiasm for the natural environment, including Claude Monet and Ansel Adams.
Rochelle Aultman:
Rochelle Aultman's style is best described as lyrical abstraction. Whimsical and dreamy are often words used to encompass her personality and work. Painting was an opportunity to fit into a place where she could express her eccentricity.
"As a child, nature was my playground, and my most cherished memories are running across the field barefoot to my grandparents amongst the dandelions and honeybees, wild and free," Rochelle expressed. "That is who I will always be, even when life tries to harden me." It is those cherished moments that shaped Rochelle into the person that she is today.
"Seeing is more than with your eyes," Rochelle conveyed. "It's tapping into those senses that allow you to really feel the world around you. To immerse yourself in nature is to reconnect and ground oneself." Rochelle has always felt that textures in nature can transport you back to a time and place. That emotional attachment to textures help make up Rochelle's work and give it that magical feeling.
"It's a recollection of moments in time made up of not just what can be seen, but felt by the heart and soul," Rochelle remarked. It is with that intuitive spirit that begins the creative process for Rochelle. Rochelle Aultman resides in Coleman with her husband, Chris, and their two children, Sofia and Wyatt. This is where she grew up and chose to raise a family. She continues to explore different techniques to improve upon her artist language by spending time in her home studio daily.
Karen Mead Elford:
The majority of my artwork generally includes photography, watercolors, mixed-media and abstract pieces. I have been working a lot with texture and metallics. My style is exploratory because I can never limit myself to just one medium, subject or artistic patterning and I am always investigating new methods. In fact, I refuse to narrow myself down to just one style because it is my desire to always learn some new method or technique and to maintain a fresh outlook on art and how I offer it to others.
