From: Whistler House Museum Of ArtBuilt in c.1825 by the innovators of the American Industrial Revolution, the Whistler House Museum of Art has stood as a beacon of engineering and art in Lowell for two hundred years. Home to the Chief Engineers of the Locks and Canal Company, tenants such as Paul Moody, George Washington Whistler, and James Francis oversaw the construction of canals, railway systems, and the city of Lowell itself. In 1834, the famous American artist James McNeill Whistler was born in the house – an individual who internationally became one of the most celebrated American artists.
Today, the building serves as the headquarters of the Lowell Art Association, Inc. (1878), the oldest incorporated art association in the United States. The Whistler House Museum of Art is internationally recognized for its distinguished collection of 19th and early 20th century representational American art, featuring works by James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Arshile Gorky, Aldro Thompson Hibbard, and many more New England artists.
This year, as we celebrate a remarkable milestone at the Museum—the 200th anniversary of the historic home... Join us as we honor the engineers, artists, and workers of Lowell who have played a pivotal role in shaping our city into the thriving, diverse community we cherish today.
Become a part of this special celebration and help us reflect on our rich heritage as we look forward to a promising future.
Stay tuned for more information on the year long events and festivities in the months to follow!
